From Middle English *faxed, from Old English feaxed, ġefeaxed (“haired; having hair”), from Old English feax (“hair”). More at fax.

Meanings

  1. (obsolete) Having a head of hair; hairy.
    • A comet is a ‘faxed’ star, that is, a hairy, a tailed star. But ‘faxed’ got corrupted into ‘fixed’ star during the seventeenth century. 1859, The London review: Volume 11
