From Middle English daungerous (“difficult, severe, domineering, arrogant, fraught with danger”), dangerous, from Anglo-Norman [Term?], from Old French dangereus (“threatening, difficult”), from dangier. Equivalent to danger + -ous. Displaced native Old English frēcne.
