Etymology

From Middle English applicaten, a learned borrowing from Latin applicāt-, the past participial stem of applicō. In later use perhaps an independent back-formation from application. For its use by non-native speakers, compare Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish aplicar and Italian applicare.
