Um 1700 gelangte Toxikum, zunächst auch die Form Toxicon, in die Medizinsprache. Es liegen das lateinische toxicum ^(→ la) beziehungsweise toxicon ^(→ la) zugrunde, denen das altgriechische τοξικόν (toxikon^☆) ^(→ grc) ‚Gift, Pfeilgift‘ vorausgegangen ist. Hierbei handelt es sich um die neutrale substantivierte Form des Adjektivs τοξικός (toxikos^☆) ^(→ grc)‚ zu Pfeil und Bogen gehörend‘, einer Bildung zu τόξον (toxon^☆) ^(→ grc), Bogen, Pfeil‘. Der Bezug zu Pfeil und Bogen erklärt sich damit, dass manche Naturvölker ihre Pfeilspitzen mit Pflanzen- oder Schlangengift einreiben.
