Etymology

From year + hundred, a calque of German Jahrhundert (“century”); from Jahr (“year”) + Hundert (“hundred”). Cf. Scots yeirhunder, Saterland Frisian Jierhunnert, German Jahrhundert, Danish århundrede, Swedish århundrade, Norwegian århundre, all meaning century and being composed of the cognates (sisterwords) of English year and hundred.

Meanings

1. (rare) Century (a hundred-year timespan).
   • My oldest specimen is Danish, an "overgang"-stone (bearing Old-Northern as well as Scandinavian runes) from about the first half of the 9th century. The runic examples thus run down from the 9th to the 14th yearhundred. 1878, Carl Säve, Some runic stones in Northern Sweden:
