If you’re recorded running at 77.1 mph over a 75 mph speed limit for a mile or so, that’s a meeting-without-tea-or-biscuits and a threat of disciplinary action, despite the fact that all you can tell is the needle is just over 75 – and on many trains it’ll be flickering too.
