Meanings

1. (transitive) To separate from a coalesced state.
   • It is clear that what sound change has coalesced, sound change cannot uncoalesce; and the probability is vanishingly small that analogy and borrowing should proceed in such a way as to restore just the situation that had pertained before the restructuring. 1973, Charles Francis Hockett, Man's Place in Nature, page 292:
