By the end of the 1970s, as the legendary Samoan band The Five Stars sang [in their song 'Pipa', quoted as an epigraph], New Zealand had become part of a trans-Oceania Samoan world. This Samoan world ranged from Niu Sila (New Zealand) to Amerika (the United States) but always retained Samoa ('Hamo' - a colloquialism) at its centre. 'Pipa' is, in its own way, an anthem of the transnational, incredibly mobile, contemporary Polynesian world: but it is one of many. By this time not just Samoans, but Tokelauans, Tongans, Cook Islanders, Niueans, Tuvaluans and Fijians had brought New Zealand into their world and their stories.
