1. A word or other linguistic form borrowed from a classical language into a later one, but partly reshaped based on later sound changes or by analogy with inherited words in the language. These words occur, for example, in the Romance and the Indo-Aryan languages.
   • Canónigo 'canon' , a semi-learned borrowing from L. canonicus, still shows the suffix -icus with almost no change. 1960, Paul M. Lloyd, A Linguistic Analysis of Old Spanish Occupational Terms, page 102:
