Meanings

  1. (uncountable) The input sound level that creates the same output voltage as the receiving microphone in the absence of any sound, and which represents the lowest point of the microphone's dynamic range.
  2. (uncountable) The noise radiating from a ship, etc. because of its own operation.
    • Causes of ship-radiated noise. This is another important factor, as the noise radiated by a ship is received by all sonar systems on board (self-noise) and imposes limits to the performance achievable when it exceeds ambient noise levels. 2002, Xavier Lurton, An Introduction to Underwater Acoustics, page 112:
