From French French saurel (“jack mackerel”), from Ancient Greek σαῦρος (saûros, “horse mackerel”). Compare Spanish jurel.
Meanings

Any carangoid fish of the genus Trachurus, especially Trachurus trachurus, of Europe and America, and Trachurus picturatus of California; the skipjack, scad or horse mackerel.
In general, while the consumption of fresh fish is tending to increase, 60 per cent of consumption consists of sardines, saurel, anchovy and mackerel, that is, very inexpensive fish.
