Etymology

From riding' + 'crop *In the 1500s, a crop (or croppe) came to mean the "top" of something with a handle. By the 1800s, it came to mean the handled object itself; for instance, in equestrianism, it would mean a whip. It came to mean a short horsewhip that could, traditionally, in British foxhunting, also open doors without dismounting by the 1860s.
