Based on the diagnostic criteria a total of 90 individuals with a mean age of 54 years were characterized as NPDR. The PDR patients (n = 70, mean age = 56 years) with mild-moderate form of the disease having new vessels on disc (NVD) or new vessels elsewhere (NVE), and high-risk form having new vessels on disc (NVD) about one third disc area, or any NVD with vitreous or preretinal hemorrhage or NVE greater than half disc area with vitreous or preretinal hemorrhage were sampled.
