From pragmatic + -ism, coined by Charles Sanders Peirce to distinguish his pragmatic philosophy from pragmatism.
Meanings
- (uncountable, usually) A Peircean philosophy based on strict logic, the immutability of truth, the reality of infinity, and the difference between (i) actively willing to control thought, to doubt, to weigh reasons, and (ii) willing not to exert the will, willing to believe.
