1. A variety of bald cypress native to blackwater rivers of the Southeastern United States; a deciduous conifer of species Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium (formerly known as Taxodium ascendens).
   • In areas of peat soils, bald cypress dominates, and in marl soils, pond cypress dominates. Their growth forms are distinctive--bald cypress limbs extending horizontally and pond cypress extending at a uniform upward angle. 2016 November 3, Thomas E.    • Most of the pond cypress leaves are twisted so that they stand erect along the upper side of the twigs, creating a featherlike effect.
