1. (countable, uncountable) A poisonous North American plant, Phytolacca americana, with reddish stems, broad leaves, clusters of white flowers, and dark purple berries.
   • Native Americans introduced whites and slaves to several edible greens including marigold, milkweed, and pokeweed (Whit 2007).
