Etymology

From Middle French poetique, from Latin poeticus, from Ancient Greek ποιητικός (poiētikós) from ποιέω (poiéō, “make”). Displaced native Old English sċoplīċ and lēoþlīċ. Doublet of poietic.

Meanings

1. Relating to poetry.
   • Some poems, echoing the purpose of early poetic treatises on scientific principles, attempt to elucidate the mathematical concepts that underlie prime numbers. Others play with primes’ cultural associations.
