1. Someone whose occupation is to make patterns, which are used as a guide in the manufacture of something else. ▸ A tradesperson who makes wooden patterns from which sand molds for sand casting are made.
   • One soon learned, however, that it was no easy thing to make wood do exactly as one required it.
