Etymology

From patho- + -gen. Second element ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁- (“lineage”) through Ancient Greek γένος (génos, “birth”)

  1. An agent that can cause disease, especially an infectious microorganism, such as a bacterium, virus, protozoon or fungus.
