otome game en · NOUN

Etymology

Borrowed from Japanese 乙(おと)女(め)ゲーム (otome gēmu, literally “girl game”).

Meanings

  1. A story-based video game in which the player attempts to establish a romantic relationship between the female player character and one of several (usually male) love interests.
    • The otome games are marketed heavily toward female gamers, something generally uncommon with video game marketing. As of this writing, several game developers have invested in localizing otome games originally released only in Japan into English. 2017, Amy M.
