1. Platanus orientalis, a deciduous tree known for its longevity and spreading crown.
   • Although Platanus orientalis L., the true oriental plane, is stated on excellent authority to be hardy as far north as Massachusetts, the records of its being planted in our vicinity are surprisingly few. 1937, Journal of the New York Botanical Garden, volume 38, page 62:
   • The former species is known as the Oriental Plane (Platanus Orientalis), and the latter as the Occidental Plane (Platanus Occidentalis). The Oriental Plane was introduced into England about the middle of the sixteenth century. 1842, Charles Knight, “The Plane Tree”, in Knight's Penny Magazine, volume 11, page 97:
