From Middle English oratorie, from Anglo-Norman oratorie, Middle French oratoire, and their source, Late Latin ōrātōrium. Doublet of oratorio. Displaced native Old English bēdhūs.

Borrowed from Latin ōrātōria, from the feminine of ōrātōrius (“oratorial”).
