1. The right to exploit the mineral resources located on or, especially, beneath a parcel of land.
   • Near-synonym: mines and minerals
   • In 1900 it was found that the stability of the viaduct was threatened by colliery workings. To overcome this, the G.W.R. obtained an Act of Parliament on August 8, 1902, authorising the purchase of all the land, mines and mineral rights within eight chains of any portion of the viaduct. This is, I believe, the only instance of a railway company obtaining an Act for this specific purpose, although there has been a number of instances where ordinary sections of line have been protected by purchase of mineral rights. 1957 November 14, C.
