Etymology
First attested in 1653; borrowed from Latin mēnsūrātus, perfect passive participle of mēnsūrō, see -ate (verb-forming suffix). Doublet of measure.
Meanings
- (obsolete) To measure absolutely the height, latitude and longitude of a point on the earth.
- To measure accurately and precisely the position of an object. Not to be confused with refinement.
