Borrowed from French mélongène, from Medieval Latin melongena, Italian melanzana, from Greek μελιτζάνα (melitzána), from Arabic اَلْبَاذِنْجَان (al-bāḏinjān, “eggplant”), from Classical Persian بادنگان (bādingān), from باتنگان (bātingān), from Sanskrit वातिगगम (vātiga-gama, “eggplant”). Doublet of aubergine, brinjal, and malidzano.
