From Middle English malme (“sand”), from Old English mealm (as in mealmstān (“sandstone”)), from Proto-Germanic *malmaz (“sand, ore”); related to Old Norse malmr (“ore, metal”). From the same Proto-Indo-European root as meal. Doublet of mulm.
