Macarena (“dance”) + wing. Coined by the popular media, named after the popular 1990s dance that originated from the dancing in the video for the eponymous 1990s song by Los Del Rios. The song in turn is named after the Spanish female given name Macarena, which originates as a Marian title, after the location in Seville. The Seville location is named after the city gate, which had the Arabic name Bab-al-Makrin, which in turn is named for the land, which was once owned by a Roman patrician Macarius, from the Latin, which originates from Ancient Greek μακάριος (makários, “blessed, happy”).
