  1. (qualifier:fine arts) A curved line that is supposedly inherently beautiful. It is represented in different ways by different authors, although usually as a kind of elongated S (like the one in William Hogarth’s painting in this entry).
    • Every line is the line of beauty; it is only fumble and bungle which cannot draw a line. This only is ugliness.
