  1. A piece of iron projecting upwards on which a lamp can be hung.
    • One or two lines (the G.N.R. and the L.D. & E.C.R., for example) had two lamp-irons, one above the other, on the chimney, and the Midland and the North Staffordshire achieved the same effect by placing the secomd iron a short way down on the smokebox door. 1945 March and April, J.
