1. In a laconic manner.
   • An unsuccessful man was in prison , and wrote to him for relief; he replied very laconicly , that it was not convenient to him to grant it; but a little time afterwards a person waited upon the applicant, and told him he had some money for him, but he was on no account to tell who from, but he hoped it would be of use to him, and if it was, and he really required more, he had a discretionary power to relieve him. 1817, Fragments to the Memory of the Late Richard Reynolds, Esq., page 79:
