Meanings

  1. The correct sounding of notes or intervals; true pitch.
  2. A tuning system in which intervals (the space between notes' frequencies) are derived from simple whole number ratios.
    • But the combinatorial tones of the equally tempered Thirds lie between those of the perfect and Pythagorean Thirds, and are less than a semitone different from those of just intonation. 1895 [1877], Alexander J.
