Meanings

1. (US, countable, uncountable) A school for children who have completed elementary school or grade school, but are not yet old enough for high school. It often includes grades 7 and 8, and possibly also 6 or 9.
   • In California the term originally used was "intermediate high school," later shortened to "intermediate school," but the term "junior high school" is rapidly supplanting the others. 1919, Guy Vernon Bennett, The Junior High School, Warwick & York, page 1:
2. (Philippines, countable, uncountable) A secondary education school for grades 7–10 (a continuation of elementary school). It is succeeded by senior high school.
3. (Shetland, countable, uncountable) A secondary education school for grades 7–10 (a continuation of primary school), found in rural areas. It is succeeded by high school, though high schools also serve these grade levels in their immediate catchment areas.
