Etymology

From 1689. Originally used imperatively, as an exclamation to call attention to a speaker. Now used generally as a cry of approbation.

Meanings

  1. (after a toast, often) Let us hear and applaud the previous speaker; I endorse the previous statement; expression of support, agreement, or enthusiasm for what has just been said.
