Etymology
Ultimately from Sanskrit सागर (sāgara, “ocean”), through Prakrit Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀬𑀭 (sāyara) and Apabhraṃśa forms. A regional Eastern Indo-Aryan term. Compare Assamese হাৱৰ (hawor), Bengali হাওর (haōr), and Sylheti ꠀꠅꠞ (aor).
