On swamps where there is an excess of ground water, intercepting ditches are dug along contour lines to cut off the surface flow as well as the ground water as a measure of preventing cold water from flowing into the field, and thus preserving the terrestrial and water temperature on the farm. The experience of An-t'u Hsien is a good example. In order to preserve the temperature on the fields, the local peasants dig long and winding ditches to raise the temperature in the swamp.
