Etymology

From gore + -y. Compare Middle English gorry (“muddy”), and güre, gire, girre (“gory, clotted”), from Old English gyr, gyru (“filthy, muddy”), from gor (“dirt, dung”); Old Frisian gere, iere (“muddy water”). More at gore.
