(uncountable, usually) A profound and persistent unhappiness caused by having characteristics (body parts, clothing, etc) of, or being perceived as, a certain gender or sex, experienced especially by transgender people.
In the latest version of the DSM (the DSM-5) released in May 2013, the association changed the name from GID to “gender dysphoria.” According to the American Psychiatric Association, they changed the name “to better characterize the experiences of affected children, adolescents, and adults” (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
