Some schools have become advanced production units of various hsien and communes, serving as stations for the propagation of good seeds, for the performance of scientific experiments, and for the extension of techniques. For example, the Liang-ping-t'ai Agricultural Middle School of An-t'u [translating 安圖 /安图 (Āntú)] Hsien, to introduce varieties of high-yield paddy rice suited to the special local condition of a short frostless period, conducted comparative experiments on eight of such varieties and compiled records of the year-round observation and survey of water temperatures, thus accumulating a vast amount of material on the study of high-yield paddy rice.
