(historical) A formulary (collection of models for official writings).
We must remember, however, that the formulars of the Merovingian and Carolingian chanceries were not contemporary with the most active period of English diplomatic writing, and that these very formulars were practically disused by the dictatores of the tenth and eleventh centuries, when individuality of style ran riot in the Western chanceries.
