„Volkstum“ lässt sich nicht auf eine Nation von mehreren Dutzend Millionen anwenden, „Volkstum“ ist ein vorwiegend landschaftlich begrenzter Begriff, durchsetzt von bäuerlichen Erinnerungen. Es gibt kein „deutsches Volkstum“, wohl aber eines der deutschen Stämme, wohl ein thüringisches, rheinisches oder bayrisches. Es gibt kein britisches, französisches oder spanisches „Volkstum“, wohl aber eines von Schottland, von der Normandie oder von Viscaya.
