1. (archaic) A heated iron used to warm flip (the drink).
   • A flip dog is not much on the bark, for it is only a bar of iron shaped somewhat like a poker, and when it was in use had to be heated red-hot and then plunged into the glass containing the flip, which by the way was made, according to the taste of the drinker, either from ale, cider, or wine, and highly spiced; sometime an egg was stirred in it to give it a little more body. 1908, Edward Randolph Emerson, Beverages, past and present, page 272:
