Ultimately derived from Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, “red”) + μέλος (mélos, “limb”) + ἄλγος (álgos, “pain”); first used in 1878 by Silas Weir Mitchell to describe a syndrome of red congestion and burning pain in the hands and feet.
