A late bloomer in the journals compared to his peers, he didn’t even submit his first paper for publication until age thirty-five, chronicling his discovery of an unstable gas he called “inflammable air”—the element now known as hydrogen, the basic building block of the universe. He then determined the composition of water by using a spark of electricity to combine this new gas and “dephlogisticated” air—oxygen.
