demographic tax en · NOUN
Etymology
In analogy to demographic dividend.
Meanings
-
The reversal of the demographic dividend that occurs when a society's large workforce enters retirement en masse while population growth has stalled or declined.
While the policy stemmed the population growth during the almost four decades it was in place, it also dampened China's demographic dividend and is now increasing its demographic tax. A young person in China may now need to support their children and two aging parents alone as they have no siblings to share the duties and costs.
