   • The selection of a crop for planting patterns also affects the metal uptake by plants. Liu et al. (2012) studied the effect of crops (maize [Zea mays], tomato, cabbage, and pakchoi), and different planting patterns such as monoculture crops companion-planted with a legume, and crop companion planted with another crop on heavy-metal uptake by plants under field conditions. A higher Cd concentration was found in tomato and pakchoi than in cabbage and maize. Companion planting with Japanese clover increased the Cd concentration in crops compared to the monoculture. The increase in Cd uptake by plants with coplanting was believed to be due to the increase in bioavailable Cd concentration in the soil aroused by the release of low molecular weight organic acids from roots of the second crop as suggested by Liu et al. (2012). Tang et al. (2012) further confirmed that cocropping with phytoextraction plants and food crops may reduce Cd concentrations in food crops, thus, might be an option to reduce Cd concentrations in grains (Rizwan et al., 2016a). Conversely, proper cropping pattern might possibly enhance Cd phytoremediation by crops.
