I don't think I'm being close-minded (close-eared?). I'm just trying to get at the bottom of why Miles' later stuff doesn't work for me.

Synonym of closed-back (“completely covering the ears”).
My friend gave me a pair of Sony MDR-CD180 headphones that are close-eared (completely cover your outer ear). They're not professional headphones, but they get the job done.
