chromoblast en · NOUN

Etymology

From chromo- + -blast.

Meanings

  1. A precursor cell for chromaffin cells.
    • Possibly more than one type of chromoblast precursor is present in the adrenal primordium[.] TH levels are lower in chromoblasts that have migrated into the adrenal primordium and that are destined to become future neurones or NA cells than in future A cells[.] [figure legend] 1999 October, K. Langley, N. J. Grant, “Molecular markers of sympathoadrenal cells”, in Cell and Tissue Research, volume 298, Springer-Verlag, →DOI, page 189:
    • During embryogenesis, chromoblasts destined to become either adrenaline- or noradrenaline-secreting cells migrate in small homotypic groups independently into the gland along unmyelinated nerve fibres with the consequence that the two chromaffin cell phenotypes have different innervation and thus respond to different stimuli (Leon et al. 1992; Edwards et al. 1996). 2006 January, E. Crivellato, D. Guidolin, B. Nico, G.G. Nussdorfer, D. Ribatti, “Fine ultrastructure of chromaffin granules in rat adrenal medulla indicative of a vesicle-mediated secretory process”, in Anatomy and Embryology, published 17 November 2005, →DOI, page 85:
    • PPGL [pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma] similarly occur at respective intra-adrenal and extra-adrenal locations, but originate from chromaffin cells or their chromoblast precursors, and are usually detected in adulthood though may be overlooked in childhood. 2022 July 26, Graeme Eisenhofer, Mirko Peitzsch, Nicole Bechmann, Angela Huebner, “Biochemical Diagnosis of Catecholamine-Producing Tumors of Childhood: Neuroblastoma, Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma”, in Frontiers in Endocrinology, volume 13, article number 901760, →DOI, page 2:
  2. A hypothesized cell, arising from the neural crest, that serves as a common progenitor cell for pigment cells, especially in some fishes and amphibians.
    • The three primary pigment cell types arise directly from a neural-crest-derived progenitor cell (chromoblast) with a tripotent pigment organelle. Fate specification of the chromoblast is determined by genetic and environmental factors that affect the formation of pigment-producing organelles. [figure legend] 2023 April 13, Mirindi Kabangu, Raissa Cecil, Lloyd Strohl II, et al., “Leukocyte Tyrosine Kinase (Ltk) Is the Mendelian Determinant of the Axolotl Melanoid Color Variant”, in Genes, volume 14, number 4, →DOI, page 3:
    • The morphological changes are accompanied by the establishment of a well-differentiated dorso-ventral pigmentation pattern. In the ocular side, stem chromoblasts differentiate into adult chromatophores (mainly melanophores, xanthophores and iridophores) and larval chromatophores progressively disappear. 2019 September 20, Patricia I. S. Pinto, Cláudia C. Guerreiro, Rita A. Costa, et al., “Understanding pseudo-albinism in sole (Solea senegalensis): a transcriptomics and metagenomics approach”, in Scientific Reports, volume 9, article number 13604, →DOI, page 1:
    • Similar to other vertebrates, fish pigment cells are developed and differentiated from neural crest cells during early embryonic development [4]. Neural crest cells are first developed into chromoblasts and then differentiated into chromophores. 2021 February 20, Bo-Tian Yang, Bin Wen, Yu Ji, et al., “Comparative metabolomics analysis of pigmentary and structural coloration in discus fish (Symphysodon haraldi)”, in Journal of Proteomics, volume 233, article number 104085, →DOI, page 1:
