From area + -ic. By analogy from French surfacique. Introduced to English by International Standards Organization (ISO) in 1992 in ISO 31 (Quantities and units).

Meanings

1. (not-comparable) Of or pertaining to area; especially used to describe a measurement per unit area.
   • Areic charge is measured in coulombs per square meter.
