From Medieval Latin aerūginōsus (“rust-colored”) directly and via Middle French erugineux (“verdigris-colored”), from Latin aerūginōsus (“rusty”), from aerūgō (“rust”) + -ōsus (“-ose: forming adjectives”), from aes (“copper, bronze, brass”) + -ūgō (“forming nouns related to thin coatings or coverings”).
