From international scientific vocabulary, reflecting a New Latin combining form, from New Latin acarus, from Ancient Greek ἄκαρι (ákari, “cheese mite, tick”), which is conventionally associated with the adjective ἀκαρής (akarḗs, “tiny, minute”) but may also be related to κάρνος (kárnos, “louse”) or κόρις (kóris, “bedbug”).
